How Do You Implement Visual Configuration Software?

Jeremy Batts

Published: July 12, 2019

As our experience economy continues to evolve and push towards interactive visual configuration and sales, a general question that continues to plague the early adopter is the simple question, “How do I implement my products into a visual configuration software?” This is more often than not a new paradigm in old territory. We all want the success and efficiencies that true dynamic visuals can provide, we just need to know “how”.

Many of our customers begin this journey with doubts that a visual solution can even accommodate their products. We have seen products ranging in complexity from simple configure-to-order (CTO) with a base plus options approach, all the way to fully custom engineered-to-order (ETO) product systems that require multiple parts and dynamic rules driving proper configurations. This complexity is amplified from a purely conceptual standpoint, ie. How would our users even configure with a 3D visual solution?

Understanding the problem begins with understanding the product in a new light. It takes a “re-discovery” of the product from sales, marketing, and engineering. Some product traits to think about as you’re identifying the flagship products for a Visual Configurator:

  • Configuration options that would make a visual impact
  • The engineering rules that drive the configuration of the product
  • The intended audience

Our approach to product implementation on the ATLATL Visual platform takes the dissection of the products identified from above and places process and tools behind it.

We first, work directly with our customers to understand the product at the technical engineering level by breaking down and identifying the product implementation needs, rules, and requirements for a visual solution.

Next, we take the supplied reference models and engineering resources and convert them into lightweight and portable models. This conversion offers the most efficient performance for a real-time and dynamic experience, while visually representing the product that is true to its real-world counterpart.

The completed assets are imported, and that's when implementation truly begins. Along with your assets and UI needs, we utilize the power of our patent pending ATLATL Creation Graph and the ATLATL Rules Engine (this is what drives and ensures consistent and accurate configurations within the products own confines) to deliver a high powered sales tool across your sales channels.

The process for implementing a product into a visual solution is straightforward and repeatable. The complexity of implementation is only as complex as the product itself. ATLATL Visual is a solution that can accommodate your products. No matter the complexity.
